Someone asks ChatGPT for the best tool in your category. It names three. You want to be one of the three. There is no page two to fall back to. That is the whole game.

What is generative engine optimization?

GEO is the work of earning visibility and citations inside AI-generated results. It sits on top of classic SEO, because the assistants mostly retrieve from search: they run a query, pull a handful of pages, and write an answer from them. Be retrievable first. Then be quotable. Then be trusted.

From the GEO research literature and our own monthly prompt testing.

A monthly GEO routine

  1. Pick ten prompts a buyer would type. Run them in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Log whether you are named and who is named instead.
  2. Read the pages that got cited. Match their clarity, then add what they lack: fresher data, a cleaner table, a real example.
  3. Chase one or two third-party mentions on sites the models already quote in your space.
  4. Re-run the prompts next month. Track the trend, not any single answer.

Here is the deal: the pages getting cited in AI answers are, overwhelmingly, the pages that already rank well and read clearly. GEO is not a workaround for weak SEO. It is the next layer on strong SEO.

How to measure GEO

  • A monthly prompt log across the three main assistants
  • Referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and Google's AI surfaces in analytics
  • Branded and category prompt tracking for the trend line
  • A dedicated AI-visibility tool once the channel earns a line item

What the data shows

Run your ten buyer prompts once a month and screenshot the answers. Six months of those screenshots is the most persuasive report you can put in front of a client, and it tells you exactly which competitor to study.

Short case study

A B2B analytics tool

The brand ranked well but was never named when buyers asked ChatGPT or Perplexity for "best [category] tools". Competitors with third-party review coverage were. We commissioned two independent reviews, published an original benchmark study, and tightened the comparison pages.

Named in 7 of 10 target prompts across the three assistants within a quarter, up from 1 of 10.

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO the same as AEO?

They overlap. AEO is about clean extraction on your page. GEO is broader: earning citations across multiple AI platforms, which also depends on third-party mentions and entity strength.

How long does GEO take to show results?

If you already rank well, citation improvements can appear within weeks of restructuring content. Building the entity and third-party mentions that move harder prompts takes months.

Do I need a paid AI-visibility tool?

Not to start. A monthly manual prompt log across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity is enough until the channel is clearly worth managing.
