If you learned hosting before 2020, cPanel is muscle memory. If you are starting now, you may never touch it, and that is mostly fine.
Why hosts moved away
cPanel changed to per-account pricing in 2019, which raised costs for hosts with many small accounts. Hostinger built hPanel, SiteGround built Site Tools, others followed. The custom panels are cleaner and tuned to that host's stack.
What you gain with a custom panel
- A simpler interface aimed at common tasks, less clutter
- Tighter integration with the host's caching, staging and backups
- Often a lower plan price, since the host is not paying cPanel licence fees
What you lose
- Portability: a cPanel-to-cPanel move is close to one click; custom-to-cPanel is a manual migration
- Familiarity: tutorials and forum answers often assume cPanel
- Some advanced tools that cPanel exposes and a stripped-down panel hides
When cPanel still matters
If you manage many client sites and rely on cPanel and WHM workflows, if you move sites between hosts often, or if your team already knows it, staying on cPanel hosts (A2, GreenGeeks, Namecheap, many others) saves friction. For a single site you plan to keep in one place, the custom panel is a non-issue.

The practical cost of a custom panel is at migration time. If you value being able to move your site to another host in one click, pick a cPanel host. If you expect to stay put, pick the best host and do not worry about the panel.
