Sizing an MT5 VPS like an MT4 one
MT5 uses two to three times the memory of MT4 for the same work and leans harder on the CPU during indicator calculations and backtests. A 1 GB plan that runs MT4 fine will make MT5 lag or crash. Start at 4 GB, and add 2 GB per extra chart.
Running the strategy tester on the live VPS
MT5's tester is CPU and disk heavy. Run a long optimisation on the same VPS that hosts your live EA and you can starve the live terminal of resources at the worst time. Backtest on your own machine or a separate VPS, then deploy the settings.
Paying for in-hall Equinix latency your broker cannot use
If your broker hosts MT5 in a regional datacenter, not NY4 or LD4, a premium Equinix-colocated VPS gains you almost nothing. Confirm the broker's server location first; if it is regional, a high-RAM general VPS near that region is better value.
Ignoring the vCPU count
MT5 traders fixate on RAM and forget cores. One vCPU is tight for MT5 plus Windows plus any indicator load. Two vCPU is a sensible floor, four if you run multiple charts or heavy custom indicators.
