Pet publishing splits into four tiers, and where you can land a byline depends on the credentials behind it, not the size of your list.

The major pet-media brands are vet-reviewed and mostly staff-written. The dog and cat verticals take contributions with the right expertise. The vet and insurance resources want licensed authors. The enthusiast blogs are wide open. The list of 100 is below, grouped roughly by tier.

Pick your tier first

TierExamplesHow you get in
Major pet-media brandsChewy, PetMD, The Spruce Pets, Rover, AKC, PetfinderMostly not guest posts. A contribution from a licensed vet, certified trainer or named credentialed expert
Dog & cat verticalsDogster, Catster, iHeartDogs, K9 of Mine, The Labrador Site, PetGuideFreelance and contributor pitches; how-tos, breed guides, product testing with hands-on detail
Vet & pet-insurance resourcesPreventive Vet, Whole Dog Journal, ASPCA Pet Insurance, Embrace, FigoContributed pieces from vets, vet nurses and behaviourists; strict on health claims

What the metrics mean

MetricWhat it isHow much it matters
Domain Rating (DR)Ahrefs' 0 to 100 score for a whole site's backlink profileA useful filter, not a verdict
Domain Authority (DA)Moz's equivalent 0 to 100 scoreSame idea as DR
Page Authority (PA)Moz's score for one specific pageMatters once you know which page your post will live on
URL Rating (UR)Ahrefs' score for one specific URLSame purpose as PA
Monthly TrafficEstimated organic visits per monthThe most honest signal that a link will be seen
Spam ScoreMoz's 0 to 4 estimate of how many spam signals a site showsIn this niche, treat 3 to 4 as a reason to look closely before you pitch

Here is the deal: the pet niche is full of thin, ad-heavy blogs that all republish the same "15 human foods dogs can eat" article. A placement on a vet-reviewed brand or a vertical with real readers is worth more than a dozen of those, and it is the kind of link that survives an update.

Domain Rating, Domain Authority, Page Authority, URL Rating, estimated monthly traffic and Spam Score. Every domain was checked live in September 2026; shut-down, parked and merged sites were swapped for live equivalents. Metrics are third-party estimates and shift over time.

The pitch that works for pet editors

  1. Lead with the credential or the hands-on. "As a small-animal vet" or "I tested 9 no-pull harnesses on two large dogs over 6 weeks" earns the read.
  2. Pitch the angle the staff missed. Not "how to crate-train a puppy." Something like "why crate training fails for rescue dogs, and what to do instead."
  3. Bring your own assets. Photos of your animals, test results, before-and-after. Pet editors will not run stock imagery for a hands-on piece.
  4. Match the tier's standard. Health pieces need a vet author or reviewer. Training pieces need a certification. Lifestyle pieces need real experience.
  5. Send one clip in a similar style and your short bio.
  6. Disclose any brand relationship up front, especially for food, supplements and insurance.

The test: would an editor run this if you had no product to promote? If yes, pitch it. If it is a walkthrough of your product's features, it goes in the bin.

What not to do

  • Pitch a generic "best dog foods 2026" listicle. Every site has a rolling one already, and health claims need a vet.
  • Send a health or nutrition piece with no veterinary author or reviewer. Serious pet sites will reject it.
  • Republish the same "foods dogs can and cannot eat" article that is already on 200 other blogs.
  • Stuff affiliate links, or point exact-match anchors ("best flea treatment") at your store.
  • Use AI-generated filler with no first-hand detail. In pet content it reads as generic within a paragraph.

Bottom line: a few placements on vet-reviewed brands and verticals with real readers will do more for your rankings and sales than a long list of thin pet-blog links. Use the Spam Score and traffic columns to find your few.

Frequently asked questions

Do the big pet brands like Chewy or PetMD accept guest posts?

Chewy's Be Chewy and Pet Central, PetMD, The Spruce Pets and Rover's blog commission from staff and a vetted freelance pool, and PetMD content is vet-reviewed. They will take a contribution from a licensed vet, a certified trainer or behaviourist, or a named expert with credentials. The dog and cat verticals and the enthusiast blogs are far more open.

What do I need to pitch a pet site?

For health and nutrition pieces, a veterinary or veterinary-nursing qualification, or a named vet reviewer. For training and behaviour, a recognised certification. For product and lifestyle content, hands-on testing with your own animals and your own photos. Pet is a soft-YMYL topic, so editors check credentials on anything health-related.

Can I link to my pet product or store?

Usually one disclosed link in the author bio, and only if the article is genuinely useful. Editors strip promotional links from the body and reject posts that read like a product page. Affiliate-stuffed content gets rejected fastest.

Which matters more, Domain Rating or the Spam Score?

Look at both, plus real editorial traffic. A DR 74 site with a Spam Score of 2 and a real audience beats a DR 78 site with a Spam Score of 4 that exists to trade links. In a niche this crowded with thin blogs, the Spam Score and the traffic column are the quickest way to filter.

The metrics do not match my SEO tool. Why?

Domain Rating, Domain Authority, traffic and Spam Score are recalculated constantly and differ between Ahrefs, Moz and Semrush. The pet niche churns fast and several sites here have changed owner. Re-check every site the week you plan to pitch it.
