Before you upgrade, do this
Turn on the server-side page cache and put a CDN in front, then re-run a load test. Most "we need a dedicated server" moments are a site rebuilding every page because nothing was cached. Fix that first, and a mid plan often carries far more traffic than expected.
When the upgrade is real
- A fully cached site still hits the PHP worker cap at normal peaks
- Logged-in traffic (members, carts) is heavy and cannot use the page cache
- Checkout or an API needs guaranteed CPU, not a shared pool
- Downtime now has a real revenue cost and you want failover
