What decides the real cost
Flat pricing beats a promo here. Cloudways and self-managed VPS plans charge the same every month.
Managed vs self-managed: pay for management, or do it yourself and put the saving into resources.
Backups, staging and a one-click restore, which start to be standard at this price.
The ability to scale the server up in minutes if traffic climbs.

Budget-hosting mistakes to avoid
The errors we see people make, and how to avoid each one.
Buying a shared plan at the top of the shared price range
A $9 to $10 shared plan is poor value: for the same money a Cloudways managed cloud plan or an 8 GB self-managed VPS gives more consistent performance. If you are spending $10, spend it on flat-rate cloud, not a mid-tier shared plan that still renews higher.
Picking managed when you would have coped with unmanaged
If you can follow a LEMP-stack tutorial, an unmanaged Hetzner or Contabo VPS at €6 to €7 gives you two to three times the resources of a managed plan at the same price. Only pay the management premium if server admin genuinely is not something you will do.
Not using the headroom
The point of a $10 plan over a $5 one is capacity for spikes. If you never enable object caching, never put a CDN in front, and run a bloated theme, you have paid for headroom you are not using.
How we scored these hosts
We keep a data sheet of every provider in the comparison: current intro and renewal pricing, datacenter locations, storage, backups and money-back terms, each with the sources we checked it against. The ranking on this page is our judgement about which of those providers fits web hosting under $10 best, weighted by the criteria above. A provider only appears once its current data is verified; where we could not confirm a number, that host is left off rather than guessed.
Learn the fundamentals behind this comparison
Plain-English guides to the parts of hosting that decide whether a plan performs for this use case or falls over.
- Intro Price vs Renewal Price: The Hosting Discount TrapAlmost every shared host advertises a low first-term price and renews well above it. The headline number is a discount to win you. The renewal is what you pay for most of the time you own the site.
- Shared vs VPS vs Cloud vs Dedicated Hosting: How to ChooseThe four hosting types are really one question: how much of a server is yours, and who keeps it running. Here is what each gives you and the signs it is time to move up a level.
