Contabo sells more RAM and storage per dollar than any other VPS host, by a wide margin. An 8 GB, 4 vCPU server with 200 GB of storage costs about what 1 GB costs elsewhere. That is the whole pitch, and it is real.
The trade-offs are equally real: support is slow and ticket-only, single-thread CPU performance is variable, and backups cost extra. It is a host for people who know what they are doing and want maximum resources for a self-hosted project.
Best for: Developers and self-hosters who want maximum resources for the money.

Founded in 2003 in Munich, Germany. Received private-equity investment (Oakley Capital) in 2021 and has expanded datacenters worldwide since.

Plans, the renewal price and the hidden fees
The Cloud VPS line starts around 4.50 to 5.50 euros a month for 4 vCPU and 8 GB of RAM with 100 GB of NVMe or 200 GB of SSD. Higher tiers scale to 24 GB and beyond for around 14 euros.
Pricing is monthly with no contract and no renewal jump, the same rate every month. Some plans carry a one-time setup fee that is waived on longer commitments.
There is no money-back guarantee, so the monthly billing is your safety net: try it for a month and cancel if it does not fit.
Not in the headline price:
- Automated backups are a paid add-on, typically around 20% of the server price.

Speed and uptime, from independent tests
Resource density is the headline: independent 2026 reviews (BestUSAVPS, HostProReviews) confirm the RAM and storage you are promised. Sustained single-core performance and disk I/O are more variable than Hetzner, and it depends on the datacenter and how busy the host node is.
Datacenters span Germany, the UK, the US (St. Louis, New York, Seattle), Singapore, Japan and Australia, which is broad coverage for a budget VPS host.
The support experience
Support is ticket-based, with a phone line during German business hours. Response times are the main complaint in reviews: a ticket can take hours to a day, and there is no 24/7 chat.
For a self-managed VPS where you handle most things yourself, this is often acceptable. If you expect hand-holding, it is not the host.
Migrating a site in and out
Self-managed, so migration is on you: rsync your files, dump and restore your database, repoint DNS. Contabo does not do it for you.
Security, backups and account isolation
Network-level DDoS protection is included. Everything above the OS (firewall, SSL, updates, backups) is your responsibility, as with any unmanaged VPS. Paid backups are available.
Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere
Use Contabo if
- Developers and self-hosters who want the maximum resources for a build server, a lab, a self-hosted app stack, or a media server.
- Anyone comfortable administering Linux who values RAM and storage over polish.
- Projects that need a lot of memory cheaply and can tolerate variable CPU.
Look elsewhere if
- Anyone who wants managed hosting or fast support.
- Latency-critical work like forex trading: Contabo is not exchange-optimised and adds 100 ms or more.
- Beginners: there is no safety net and no hand-holding.
Contabo alternatives worth a look

Contabo is unbeatable on one axis: gigabytes of RAM and storage per dollar. If your project needs a lot of memory and you can run the server yourself, nothing else comes close on price.
You pay for it in support speed and CPU consistency. For a knowledgeable admin running the right workload, that is a fair deal. For anyone who wants help or predictable single-thread speed, Hetzner is the better cheap VPS.
