What your kind of site needs from a host

SSH and, for a VPS, root access; not a locked-down panel.

Git deployment and staging or an easy way to clone environments.

Control over PHP, Node, Python or Ruby versions per site.

A documented API and, ideally, a CLI, so infrastructure can be code.

How we tested these hosts

We keep a data sheet of every provider in the comparison: current intro and renewal pricing, datacenter locations, storage, backups and money-back terms, each with the sources we checked it against. The ranking on this page is our judgement about which of those providers fits best hosting for developers best, weighted by the criteria above. A provider only appears once its current data is verified; where we could not confirm a number, that host is left off rather than guessed.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a VPS or is developer-friendly shared hosting enough?

If you need root, custom services (a queue worker, a websocket server, a specific database), or full control of the stack, you need a VPS. If you mainly need SSH, Git deploy, staging and PHP version control for standard PHP apps, a managed platform like Cloudways gives you that without the OS admin.

Which VPS has the best API for infrastructure as code?

Hetzner and DigitalOcean both have mature, well-documented APIs with Terraform providers and CLIs. Hetzner wins on price; DigitalOcean wins on the breadth of managed add-ons (databases, Kubernetes, Spaces object storage) around the core VPS.

Is managed hosting cheating for a developer?

No. It is a choice about where your time goes. Running your own OS is worth it when the control pays off or the learning matters. Paying for management is worth it when you would rather spend that time on the application. Plenty of senior developers use Cloudways or a PaaS for exactly that reason.
